Charitable giving program
You’ve worked hard to get where you are today, and you may be thinking about the best approach to share your wealth. A carefully constructed giving plan helps create a legacy of giving that expresses your values and the causes you care about. Giving through the IG Wealth Management Charitable Giving Program is a streamlined, cost-effective alternative to a private foundation, but without the upfront costs and complexity. With simplified administration and tax-sheltered growth, regular grants can be provided to the charities that mean the most to you.
It begins with an initial contribution of $10,000 or more to open an account dedicated solely to managing your giving. With the help of your IG Consultant, you decide how the funds are invested and which charities are to receive grants. We’ll take care of the rest.

Getting started
There are just four steps in getting started with the program.

Step 1: Open and name the account
You can give the account your own name, a family name, or name it in honour of someone. You or others can contribute to the fund in the future, and you can name a successor to take over your advisory role in the event you’re no longer able to manage the fund.

Step 2: Make your initial gift
Seed the account with an initial contribution. You’ll immediately receive a charitable tax receipt for the full amount of your donation in the year of the gift. If donating appreciated securities (such as publicly listed stocks, bonds, and mutual funds), these donations will avoid any capital gains tax.

Step 3: Provide your recommendations
Choose the charities you’d like the account to support annually, and work with us to choose the eligible fund to invest in. Each year, the Foundation grants a minimum of 5% of the value of your account.

Step 4: Make subsequent donations to the account, if desired
Contribute as frequently and as much as you wish. You’ll receive a tax receipt for the value of each donation.

The Camrenlee Memorial Fund supports the Alberta Cancer Foundation, The Edmonton Food Bank, the Salvation Army, and the War Amps of Canada.
- Why did you choose to give in this fashion? I think I have a good life. I think it’s important for people to give back. Really, how much money do you have to have?
- What inspired you to create this fund? Getting information from Hal let me know about this wonderful way to honor my parents. I named it Camrenlee by taking letters from each of our names.
- What do you remember about the approach your family took to giving in your youth? Mom always gave to charity, particularly Hope Mission. She had a thing about people not going hungry.
- What advice would you give to someone considering setting up a charitable giving account? I can’t tell someone what to do *laugh* but they should think of this.
Starting a legacy of giving – Q&A with Nicolette and Bruce
The COLIEMYN Family Fund supports the Edmonton Humane Society and the Make a Wish Foundation.
- What inspired you to create this fund? I really liked the idea of creating a legacy that our children can be involved with now by helping select which charities to support, and then they will take over in the future while involving their children.
- Why these charities? The kids can relate to these causes and understand the impact our giving is having in the world.
- What advice would you give to someone considering setting up a charitable giving account? Just do it! It’s not complex or difficult. It’s okay to start with a small amount and add more later.
- In your opinion, what role do individuals play in addressing societal issues via philanthropy? People like us who have the means to give should do so.
Remembering a loved one – Q&A with Peter B.
Peter lost his wife Dawn to cancer at a young age. The Dawn B. Memorial Fund supports The Edmonton Food Bank and the Edmonton Humane Society.
- What inspired you to create this fund? I wanted to create something that can keep giving in the spirit of who she was.
- Why these charities? Dawn frequently volunteered at the Food Bank and was insistent that every pet we took in was a rescue.
- In your opinion, what role do individuals play in addressing societal issues via philanthropy? Everyone has a role to play, anything anyone can do to help is important. Nothing is too small.
- Why did you agree to share your story publicly? They don’t teach this in school. I’m happy to share our story if it helps someone else start their own giving plan.
